Somerset County Public Schools announces encouraging results from the 2025–2026 Maryland Comprehensive Assessment Program (MCAP), highlighting progress and the district's continued commitment to academic improvement. While overall growth across the district was modest, the results reflect positive momentum and affirm that the instructional strategies being implemented throughout the district are making an impact on student learning.
One of the most encouraging outcomes from this year's assessment data is the number of grade levels demonstrating proficiency growth in English Language Arts, Mathematics, or both. Somerset County Public Schools gained two percentage points in overall Math proficiency from 2025, including doubling proficiency percentages in both Algebra 1 and 8th grade Math. Notable gains in English/Language Arts (ELA) include a 20-percentage point increase in fourth grade proficiency at Carter G. Woodson Elementary and a 21-percentage point increase in third grade proficiency at Deal Island Elementary School. These gains represent the hard work and dedication of Somerset County students, teachers, administrators, support staff, and families who remain committed to continuous improvement.
“While I am pleased with our modest gains and the effort by teachers, staff and students, we should be seeing more positive outcomes than what our results showed. In order to have more student success, we need an entire team effort from community members, parents, staff and students,” said Superintendent Mr. W. David Bromwell.
The district views this year's results as an important milestone rather than a finish line. Student achievement is built through sustained effort and Somerset County Public Schools continues to focus on long-term strategies designed to improve outcomes for every learner.
