school bus safety week

Somerset County Public Schools joins school systems across the country in observing National School Bus Safety Week, celebrated October 20–24, 2025. This annual campaign serves as a reminder for students, staff, families, and community members to prioritize safety in and around school buses each day.

With the theme “Safe Stops. Stronger Communities.”, this year’s observance highlights the importance of paying attention near school bus stops and along bus routes. SCPS transportation staff work hard to ensure that all students travel safely to and from school, but it takes everyone’s cooperation - students, families and motorists - to keep our roads safe.

In 2022, SCPS partnered with BusPatrol, the nation’s largest school bus safety camera provider. Our fleet of over 40 buses is now equipped with automated photo enforcement technology. This system helps produce evidence packages that support law enforcement in holding violators accountable for illegally passing stopped school buses.

The impact of this partnership continues to grow. During the 2024–2025 school year, 272 BusPatrol citations were issued, along with one law enforcement ticket carrying a $570 fine and three points on the driver’s record. Additionally, officers now have the authority to issue a separate Reckless Driving charge—a serious offense that can carry fines up to $1,000, six points on a license, and up to 60 days in jail—if a driver is personally observed committing the violation.

By comparison, 326 citations were issued during the 2023–2024 school year, showing progress in public awareness and compliance—yet also reminding us that continued vigilance is needed.

Bus Stop Safety Reminders

For Motorists:

  • Always stop for flashing red lights and extended stop arms.

  • Maintain a safe distance (at least 20 feet, as required by state law) when approaching a stopped bus.

  • Stay alert in school zones and near bus stops—students may step out unexpectedly.

For Students:

  • Arrive early and wait well back from the road.

  • Wait until the bus doors open and the driver signals it’s safe before crossing.

  • Remain seated and follow directions while the bus is in motion.

Together—with safe stops, proactive enforcement, and community cooperation—we strengthen safety for every student on every ride.
