WESTOVER, MD (May 14, 2025) - Students from Greenwood Elementary, Somerset Intermediate, and Carter G. Woodson Elementary proudly represented Somerset County Public Schools (SCPS) in this year’s Girls on the Run of the Greater Chesapeake program, culminating in a celebratory 5K event at Pirate's Wharf Park in Quantico, MD. In partnership with United Way of the Lower Eastern Shore, this after-school program empowers girls in grades 3–8 to build confidence, stay active, and develop essential life skills.

All three SCPS teams performed exceptionally and demonstrated the strength of teamwork, perseverance, and self-belief. Special thanks to SCPS’ dedicated Community School Liaisons for coordinating our teams—Karen Smiley (Greenwood Elementary), Stephanie O’Hara (Somerset Intermediate), and Sherri Allen (Carter G. Woodson Elementary)—for leading our students through this meaningful experience. We also extend our appreciation to the team coaches: Marquita Giesey, Christina Johnson and Danielle Moore at Greenwood, Stephanie Mowbray, Melinda Dowden and Brittany Derrickson at Carter G. Woodson, and Reunika Tull and Nakia Barkley at Somerset Intermediate.

We are proud of all our participants for crossing the finish line with strength and spirit!
